CENTURY-OLD GLEN ROSE, TEXAS METHODIST CHURCH OPENS NEWLY-RENOVATED SANCTUARY BY SPEED FAB-CRETE
The century old First United Methodist Church in Glen Rose, Texas opened its newly renovated sanctuary by Speed Fab-Crete General Contractors. The historical church began in1885 and the existing sanctuary was erected in 1916.
The major remodeling and expansion project also involved converting another existing building into classrooms and restrooms to create a fellowship hall adjacent to the sanctuary. The sanctuary's seating capacity was increased to 317 worshippers.
Callahan & Freeman Architects, also based in Fort Worth, directed the renovations and additions for the church. During recent construction, special measures were taken to protect and repair numerous stain glass windows of the sanctuary, which depict, in Gothic design, events in the life of Christ. Ten new stain glass windows also were added.
Other building improvements included: replacement of the air conditioning and heating system; replacement of the roof; enhancement of the audio-visual capabilities; upgrading of the lighting system and adding insulation and gypboard to the current 93-year-old interior stone walls.
The old exterior walls of both buildings are native stone of 24-inch thickness. A second floor was removed to create a more spacious ambience in the sanctuary.
During the project, workmen uncovered three chimneys, one which served a fireplace. The other chimneys were smaller and presumably carried smoke from pot belly stoves, used to warm the sanctuary.
Community of Hope Methodist Church
Mansfield, Texas
Community of Hope Methodist Church in Mansfield, Texas, relied on Speed Fab-Crete as construction manager for the 2005 completion of a contemporary multi-purpose worship center in the first phase of a progressive master plan. With a windowless environment, the worship center below uses digital integration of sound, lighting and video to capture the praise service weekly.
With a windowless environment, the 18,300-square-foot worship center seats more than 300 on a stained concrete floor, below an exposed ceiling, and with emphasis on theater-type audio-visual capabilities. The facility also contains a warm, “living room-style” lobby, spacious kitchen with serving window to the fellowship room, eight large classrooms, some with toilets, and offices for the pastor and church staff.
Church owners wanted Speed Fab-Crete’s unique, 6-inch-thick, precast concrete walls to form the building for extra durability and low, long-term maintenance. This was an important design criterion because the facility serves as a major day-care facility during the week.
Speed Fab-Crete was a perfect fit for Community of Hope Methodist Church. Their leaders wanted to avoid having to "educate" a "traditional religious builder" of the unique needs of a progressive congregation.
