Speed Fab-Crete's Precast Concrete Wall Building System Used To Form New Texas Justice Center

The 52,000-square-foot building contains three courtrooms - district, county and justice of the peace - offices for the judges, district attorney, county clerk and constables, a law library, jury selection room, general offices and a sally port accessing holding cells for both male and female prisoners. Metal detectors and armed sheriff's deputies, permanently assigned as security, will guard two public entrances to the complex.

Performing as the project's primary subcontractor, Speed Fab-Crete provided more than 65,000-square-feet of 6-inch-thick, precast concrete wall panels to form the building's exterior and many of the interior walls, too. The nature of the construction makes the Justice Center one of the safest buildings in Granbury, especially resistant to turbulent weather. Seldaco, LP was construction manager.

The concrete walls were fabricated and poured at Speed Fab-Crete's manufacturing plant in Fort Worth, Texas. When the center's foundation was ready, the firm shipped the walls by truck to the project site, less than an hour away, for erection by crane. Speed Fab-Crete's $1,324,000 contract also included steel erection and extensive millwork.
Callahan & Freeman Architects, Fort Worth, designed the state-of-the-art Justice Center. They met the county's design criteria that limestone rock, indigenous to the Granbury area, be used for much of the building's exterior appearance.
The interior finish predominantly is stained oak wood. For the courtrooms, boxed book matched paneling and Texas star medallions were used to help achieve an official-looking decorum.
Located a few blocks west of the Granbury town square, the Justice Center has six times the floor space of the historic1891Hood County Courthouse. Financed by certificates of obligation, the project was completed in only one year.
